Ruth Roman was born in Lynn, Massachusetts, the third youngest daughter of Lithuanian Jewish parents Mary Pauline (Gold) and Abraham Roman. When she was a young girl, Roman's father, a carnival barker, passed away and caused her mother, Mary Pauline (Gold) to be a waitress or cleaner to help them survive. Ruth went to school in Boston's tenement region, which was the most deplorable. Following only two school years she left for an acting profession. The path was difficult to take. Even though she got an opportunity at a theatre in New York posing as a still for a mystery magazine but no theater jobs were offered to her. The following job she got was the "hat check" woman at a nightclub before she gave up and relocated to Boston. The city of Boston was in which she was employed during the late night, she was an actor for New England Repertory Company and for the remainder of her time as an usherette. She earned a bachelor's diploma in drama from Bishop-Lee Theatre School.
